We all know to double check nutrition labels for nasty ingredients in the foods that we buy but, it’s not just the foods that you eat that can effect your health and well-being. Products that you use on our skin can also contain harmful ingredients that may be hazardous to your health. Make-up can be a major culprit for containing toxic, synthetic ingredients. To be honest I’ve never really checked my make-up labels but I think It’s time to clean out that vanity cabinet! Here are a few cosmetic chemicals to avoid and check for when purchasing make-up products.
BHA & BHT
These are both used in make up as a preservative. They are suspected to mess with your hormones cause allergic reactions on the skin, and may be a possible human carcinogen (cancer causing)
Is used to make products ‘creamy’ and can cause skin and eye irritation. DEA can also react with nitrites in some cosmetics to form nitrosamines which are also known human carcinogens.
Look for ingredients such as DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine and quarternium-15. Formaldehyde, another carcinogen, in make-up can be inhaled and also absorbed through the skin.
More nasty ingredients that are used as preservatives and are easily absorbed through the skin. Parabens can mess with estrogen levels and can also have negative effects on the male reproductive functions.
PEG’s, or polyethylene glycols, are commonly used in make-up as a thickening agent. PEGs may be contaminated with measurable amounts of ethylene oxide which may possibly harm the nervous system. In some cases if used on broken skin PEG’s can cause irritation and are not safe for use on damaged skin.
This is just some of the information I’ve learnt since I started researching this topic and I can’t believe how many of the products in my current make-up collection contain these ingredient. Eww!! I am currently on the hunt for a more natural make-up line so if there is one that you use and love please comment below and let me know! Thanks 🙂
