The sun is out and I’m getting ready to ditch the indoor treadmill for some fresh air and a beautiful view! One of my favorite things about Vancouver is the abundance of running paths along the water. Before moving here I was far from interested in running and would always choose a spin class over attempting a leisure 10k. Nowadays, I am far from running a marathon but I’m a lot closer than I was last year. I wanted to find an app that would make my runs a little more interesting and rewarding – something that would help me set goals and track my progress. Here are my top three picks for all you newbie (or even well seasoned) runners to try out.
This one is my go-to, and not just because I’m obsessed with all things Nike. It’s super easy to use and I love the Nike+ coach feature that creates a running program for you based on your distance goal and the time frame of your upcoming event. I also love the challenge feature – my boyfriend and I used this last year and made a bet based on who could complete 50k first. Nothing like a little healthy competition to get ya movin’.
Endomondo is very similar to Nike+ Running but is great if you are combining your runs with cycling and swimming in preparation for a marathon or ,if you’re training for a multi sport event like Tough Mudder. There are some fun built in challenges that actually offer prizes to the winners and allow you to compete with athletes around the world!
There’s nothing like a zombie on the loose to get those legs moving! The video game lover in me had to give this one a try. As you run you collect “supplies” that you use to grow your base camp and help save civilization. If you like to nerd out from time to time and want to add some excitement to your runs, this $4.59 app is worth every penny.
Let me know what apps you like to use either on your runs or in the gym – I’m always looking for new ones to try!
