DIY Natural Cleaning Products

I like to know what I’m eating and what ingredients I’m putting in my body. I never really paid attention to the ingredients in cleaning products. I mean I’m definitely not eating them, so what’s the harm right?

Chemicals found in most store-bought products linger in the air after we use them and we end up inhaling them. They also enter our bodies by absorption through the skin or through ingestion of household dust and chemical residues left on surfaces. Daily exposure to these chemicals can have acute and chronic effects. On top of the health effects, these chemicals are quite hazardous to our environment. Trying out the DIY natural cleaning products will allow you to avoid these harsh chemicals, show our Earth some love and save you a ton of money too. Win. Win. Win.

Glass Cleaner

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
1 Tbsp cornstarch or arrowroot
2 cups water
10 drops essential oil of choice (This is optional but will add a nice scent! My recommendations: lemon, orange, eucalyptus or lavender)

Combine all ingredients into a spray bottle and shake well! Spray onto glass surface and wipe with a micro-fiber cloth. Shake well before each use

Air Freshener

1/2 cup distilled water
1/2 cup rubbing alcohol
20-25 drops essential oil (Try a combo of lavender, chamomile and rosemary for a calming scent)

Combine in a spray bottle and shake well. Give it a good shake before each use as oil and water will separate.

All Purpose Cleaner

2 cups Water
1 cup Hydrogen Peroxide
¼ cup Lemon Juice

Combine in a spray bottle and mix well. Adjust ingredients to suit your needs and add essential oils if you desire a stronger scent.

Carpet Cleaner

1 cup Baking Soda
2 cups Borax
10-15 drops essential oil (try peppermint or tea tree for a fresh scent!)

Combine all ingredients in a container and mix well, crushing up any clumps. Sprinkle evenly over the carpet. Let sit for about 30 minutes and then vacuum up!
